How Much Should I Pay My Au Pair?

Au Pairs receive a weekly ‘pocket money’ in return for assistance with childcare and light household duties

We are different to other agencies and believe YOU should decide on the weekly pocket money rate for your Au pair.   Unlike other agencies, we do not mandate a rate you should pay as we believe each family situation is very different and it should be up to you and the Au Pair to agree on a fair rate of pay for the role required.  Of course, we will give you advice based on your individual circumstances.

The number of hours required, requirements of the role and level of experience of the Au Pair, should determine the fair rate of pay. As a guideline, we would suggest the following range.

Gold Au Pair

$210-250/ Up to 30 hours per week

  • Basic childcare experience
  • Good English
  • No more than 2 children in sole care, no sole care of under 2's
Gold Au Pair

$250-290/ Up to 35 hours per week

  • Basic childcare experience
  • Good English
  • No more than 2 children in sole care, no sole care of under 2's

These guidelines take into account market rate and the minimum hourly wage factoring in a $350* weekly board cost to ensure the exchange is fair. There is also an additional weighting applied to reflect the more demanding role duties and/or experience of a Platinum Au Pair.

We would recommend you seek independent advice from your accountant or the ATO on your requirements to withhold tax for your Au Pairs.
